surviving winter in rochester, Mn
“Why do we live here?”
So you’re moving to Rochester, Minnesota! Whether you’re relocating to be close to family, will be starting work or training at the world famous Mayo Clinic, or have just decided Minnesota was your favorite state and wanted to live here, one thing is for sure - you’re going to have to embrace the winter. As we say in Minnesota, there is no bad weather, only bad clothing choices.
In the last 10 years that I have lived in Rochester, we have experience all types of winters, from record-breaking cold ones to the warm El Nino variety, and everything in between. The one piece of advice I can impart is don’t try to resist it. Winter is definitely coming and if you embrace it you will have so much more fun. Even the ‘worst’ year for us resulted in this awesome science experiment known as the Leidenfrost Effect for those of us who love the official scientific terminology. It involved tossing a bowl of boiling water over my head. It was so cold, the water literally vaporized in midair. I’m betting in most states you can only learn about that experiment on the internet!
My kids and I love to do experiments, photography and art in the snow in winter. What are your creative ways to enjoy winter?
