Fun Facts and Stats
In 1863 William Worrall Mayo arrived in Rochester with his wife Louise Abigail Mayo as an examining surgeon during the American Civil War
In 1883 a great tornado demolished much of Rochester, leaving 37 dead and approximately 200 injured. There were no medical facilities in the area at the time so Dr. Mayo and his two sons (also physicians) worked together to heal the wounded. Needing nurses, Dr. William Mayo (senior) reached out to Mother Alfred Moes, the founder of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Rochester, MN to help.
After the crisis, Mother Alfred proposed an idea to work together with the Mayo family. She and her Order raised money through donations and in 1889 Saint Marys Hospital was created and ran by the sisters of Saint Francis, along with the three Mayo physicians.
Edith Graham, R.N. was the first professionally educated nurse in Rochester
Dr. Stanley Plummer was a specialist in thyroid disease, however some of his greatest legacies at the Mayo Clinic were his systems and procedures such as the integrated ‘dossier’ medical record and his coordination with the Mayo brothers to expand the scope of the Mayo practice beyond its origins of surgery.
In 1919, the Mayo brothers and their wives signed a Deed of Gift, donating the assets of the Mayo Clinic to establish a not-for-profit organization
In 1972, the Mayo Medical School opened (now named Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine)
In 1986, the Mayo Clinic united with Saint Marys Hospital and Rochester Methodist Hospital
Today, the Mayo Clinic is well over 100 years old and is the largest, integrated, not-for-profit medical group practice in the world, not focused solely on healing but also heavily involved in medical education and research. The brothers Doctors Will and Charlie Mayo pioneered the integrated, team-based approach to medicine that the Mayo Clinic is famous for.
